As we enter the mid year review period you should be considering your five days learning and development entitlement for this year. It is important that all staff make this a priority.

A vital part of the success of Civil Service reform lies in ensuring we develop into a skilled workforce with the right skills for tomorrow’s world.

Without proper assessment of skills and learning needs, it’s harder to make an effective assessment of your performance. The Civil Service wide Capabilities Plan, Competency Framework and standardised appraisal forms, with development sections, aim to help improve this.

We should also ensure that we are creating a plan for learning and development equal to the focus on objectives. Everyone should ensure they have completed a development plan as part of your mid year review, and make time for your learning.

But how do you go about doing this effectively? It’s simple. We’re asking you to take 4 steps on learning in the lead up to your mid year review.

4 steps to your 5 a year

  1. Assess it – do the 15 min competency self assessment and find out your skills needs against the Competency Framework. All staff are expected to have done this as part of the mid year review process.
  2. Discuss it – talk to your line manager about your results, including a focus on the Capabilities Plan priorities of digital, commercial and project delivery skills, as well as change leadership.
  3. Develop it – agree next steps for your development plan. There are tools that can help you, such as the Civil Service Learning example learning plans.
  4. Choose it – identify learning and development options from the Civil Service Learning website, as well as opportunities such as shadowing, coaching, mentoring and make time for them.
